Cemil Cahit Güzelbey
Books authored by Dr. Cemil Cahit GÜZELBEY, as well as materials in his personal library (including books, encyclopedias, newspapers, etc.), were donated to our library by his family. In recognition of this contribution to Gaziantep University Library and Documentation Department, a dedicated room has been allocated in his name, and these resources are made available to users.
Life of Dr. Cemil Cahit GÜZELBEY
He was born on 25 February 1908 in Gaziantep. His family originates from a Turkmen tribe known as “GÜZELBEYLÜ.” He completed his primary education at Aydınbaba Primary School and at Reşadiye-Halk Mektebi, now known as Cumhuriyet School.
He graduated from Kuleli Military High School in 1929. Although he was accepted to study at the Military Medical School, he had to leave due to illness. Three years later, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at Ankara University. While serving as a trainee judge in the judiciary, he was called up for military service due to the outbreak of the Second World War. After 28 months of military service, he worked as a judge and prosecutor in İslahiye, Pötürge, Akçadağ, and Bilecik.
He later resigned voluntarily, worked as a journalist for a period, and then began practicing as an independent lawyer. He remained in this profession for 24 years and retired in 1974. He spent the rest of his life reading and writing. His articles, mostly research-based, were published in various newspapers and magazines. He was a member of the Turkish Language Association (TDK).
He served as the president of the Gaziantep Journalists Association. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Gaziantep University. In 1981, he was among the three individuals selected for the 100th anniversary celebrations of Atatürk’s birth in Ankara. He has more than 30 published works.
He had two sons: Mustafa Oktay (architect–engineer) and Mehmet Ragıp (dentist).
